Former Virginian unemployment office staffer charged with stealing millions of dollars

BY JEFFERY PEDERSONAssociated PressAssociated PressCLEVELAND (AP) A former state unemployment office employee was arrested Friday after authorities said he stole $5.4 million from the state.

A state grand jury indicted Daniel N. Smith on charges of theft of government property and conspiracy to commit a felony, the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation said in a statement.

Smith, 44, worked for the state unemployment agency from 2003 to 2017.

He resigned in June 2017 after a grand jury charged him with stealing $5,400 from a state office.

The investigation led to the arrest of two other former state officials who also were indicted.

A third man, who worked for Smith at the agency, was not arrested.

The state says he will not face criminal charges.

Ohio has more than 12,000 people unemployed.

The Ohio unemployment office said the investigation showed that Smith and other former employees misappropriated $2.6 million of taxpayer money.

Smith’s attorney did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment.
